1Purpose

Increase the agency of local actors through solar energy, by designing and sharing low-tech machines as technological commons.

2Problem
  • Production heat depends on fossil fuels or on centralised, expensive electricity.
  • Plastic waste accumulates with no local recovery sector.
  • Small producers (cocoa, coffee, cereals) depend on intermediaries for processing.
  • Existing technologies are patented, expensive and hard to repair.
4Solution
  • A portfolio of many open source solar technologies, 10 of them already validated.
  • 3D/2D plans, BOM and « How to create & How to use » articles.
  • Training, capacity building and SunFactory Labs (places for training and building solar kits).
8Key metrics
  • Commons published and replicas built
  • People trained, active SunFactory Labs
  • Kg of plastic processed
  • Jobs created (3 to 5 per workshop)
5Unique value proposition

Low-tech, open source and costed solar machines that anyone can build, repair and improve.

Designed once, replicated everywhere: no electricity, no licence fees, no dependency.

Two unique technologies: solar plastic recycling and sun-puffed cereals.

9Unfair advantage
  • 15 years of knowledge and experience in solar thermal (since 2011)
  • World first: eyewear injected in the sun (2021)
  • Academic and FabLab network (IPL / ESELx, FabLab Benfica)
  • Non-profit hosting by the Antenna Foundation
6Channels
  • hub.antenna.ch, sunfactoryproject.com and sunfactory.world
  • Open Business Foundation (openbusiness.world)
  • SunFactory Labs: Geneva, Lisbon, Accra, Coimbra
  • FabLab residencies, Distributed Design, ecoboost.world
  • AI dissemination agents
3Segments

Beneficiaries: rural and vulnerable communities, craftspeople, small producers, micro-entrepreneurs.

Customers: FabLabs, NGOs, schools, local authorities, institutions facing a challenge.

Funders: foundations, public programmes, patrons.

10Cost structure
  • Contributors ≈ 1.4 FTE: 2,520 h/year, plus 400 h/year of assembly
  • Prototyping and measurement materials
  • Residencies, mobility, documentation and open infrastructure
  • Travel, monitoring and contingencies
  • 434,500 CHF/year
11Surplus

Reinvested in research, open documentation and opening new SunFactory Labs. No distribution: the non-profit Antenna Foundation receives the funds and pays the mandates.

7Revenue streams
  • Donations and grants for R&D, received by the Antenna Foundation
  • Invoicing developments and capacity building
  • Sale of portfolio kits
12Impact

13 Sustainable Development Goals · local jobs and income · paid missions for people in need · plastic waste recovered · energy and food autonomy · solar knowledge open and durably accessible to all.
